]]>In a world filled with fast fashion and consumerism, mindful parenting is becoming a beacon of change. As parents, we navigate through a sea of choices every day, and it's essential to reflect on the impact of our decisions, especially when it comes to our children's clothing.
Sustainable parenting is about more than just eco-friendly choices; it's a commitment to raising the next generation with awareness and responsibility. This starts with minimalism in kids' clothing, setting the stage for conscious consumption and eco-conscious living.
Where material possessions often take centre stage, embracing minimalist parenting is a refreshing and mindful choice. A minimalist family lifestyle is about simplifying life with kids. It's an intentional shift away from the clutter and excess, choosing quality over quantity. The journey into minimalist parenting opens up a treasure chest of practical benefits. It simplifies everyday routines, reduces decision fatigue, and creates space for more meaningful experiences.
Minimalist parenting isn't just a trendy concept; it's a practical guide for families seeking balance and purpose in their lives. This way of life encourages us to invest in what truly matters, curbing overconsumption and teaching our children valuable lessons about values and priorities.
In the upcoming sections, we'll delve into minimalist living with children, offering you actionable tips to streamline your parenting journey.
In this quest for more intentional and sustainable choices, we begin by exploring the realm of children's clothing. As we embrace minimalist parenting, we'll learn how to navigate the world of kids' fashion, minimise waste, and maximise the quality of life for our little ones.
Now, let's take the first step on this beautiful journey towards a minimalist family lifestyle, where "less" leads to so much more.
In a world where consumerism runs rampant, it's essential to recognise the challenges that accompany excessive purchasing for our children. The world of kids' fashion is often dominated by relentless trends and the pressure to keep up with them, which in turn triggers an overconsumption of clothing for our little ones. Overconsumption, driven by a desire to keep children stylish and fashionable, leads to a surplus of clothing items in kids' wardrobes.
This overconsumption has several implications, from clutter and disorganisation to garments forgotten at the back of closets and children outgrowing clothes before they've had the chance to wear them.
The rapid growth of fast fashion has brought about a disposable culture in clothing, and it's crucial to understand the environmental consequences associated with this shift. Fast fashion, with its low-quality, short-lived garments, encourages quick, disposable consumption, generating a surplus of clothing produced, worn briefly, and replaced with the next trend.
This disposable approach has a profound environmental impact, significantly contributing to the fashion industry's carbon footprint. The entire life cycle of disposable clothing, from manufacturing to disposal, generates a substantial amount of carbon dioxide emissions, playing a detrimental role in climate change.
The transformative power of minimalism for your children extends beyond just clothes but seeps into many aspects of life and can provide joy, commitment and simplicity for your family .
Minimalism teaches children valuable lessons about thoughtful and mindful decisions when it comes to clothing. It emphasises quality over quantity, guiding children to understand that each item in their wardrobe has value and purpose.
Embracing minimalism aligns seamlessly with the principles of sustainable parenting. By adopting a minimalist family lifestyle, parents can model responsible consumption and environmentally conscious choices, benefiting not only their children but also the planet they will inherit.
Minimalism simplifies family life. With a more focused and streamlined wardrobe, it becomes easier to locate the right pieces when needed, resulting in less clutter, financial savings, and a more organised and peaceful household. These benefits extend to children, families, and the world around us, fostering a greener and more sustainable future.
When it comes to building a child's wardrobe, quality should always take precedence over quantity. A minimalist kids' wardrobe emphasises investing in well-crafted, durable, and versatile pieces that can withstand the test of time. This principle guides parents toward selecting garments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for a variety of occasions and seasons. It encourages choices that cater to a child's comfort and self-expression while still promoting sustainable and minimalist living.
In addition to fostering quality over quantity, adopting a minimalist approach to kids' clothing brings financial benefits and a clutter-free environment into your home. The budget-friendly aspect of minimalist parenting allows for wiser spending and a wardrobe of garments that truly bring you joy. Parents can allocate their resources to a few high-quality loved items, ensuring their children have the best in terms of comfort, style, and durability. This approach not only benefits the family's finances but also aligns with ethical consumption by choosing sustainable, eco-friendly, and ethical brands.
The reduction in clutter is another significant advantage. Fewer items in a child's wardrobe translate to less time and effort spent in managing and organising clothing. It results in a simplified morning routine and an overall more peaceful and harmonious family life. With fewer clothes, children can gain a deeper appreciation for the items they have, leading to less waste and a more eco-conscious attitude.
Transitioning to a minimalist kids' wardrobe can be a transformative journey for busy parents. However, it's not just about clothing; it's a holistic approach that simplifies family life, minimises waste, and aligns with ethical and sustainable principles. Minimalism for busy parents doesn't have to be a daunting endeavour; it can be achieved through manageable and sustainable strategies. Check out these practical steps and tips to help your family embrace the benefits of minimalism in kids' clothing while navigating your busy lifestyle.
Decluttering your children's clothing and transitioning to a minimalist kids' wardrobe involves several essential steps. First and foremost, when you decide to embark on this journey, it's essential to understand the significance of decluttering kids' clothes. By thoughtfully organising and simplifying your child's wardrobe, you're not just eliminating excess, but also reducing the stress and time associated with clothing choices. It's a minimalist kids' wardrobe transition that sets the stage for more efficient and purposeful mornings.
Secondly, while decluttering, it's crucial to adhere to some guidelines for selecting high-quality, versatile items to include in your minimalist kids' wardrobe. Choosing high-quality kids' clothing means opting for pieces that are not only durable but also adaptable to various occasions. A versatile kids wardrobe of items can be mixed and matched easily, providing your child with a range of outfit options from a smaller selection of clothing.
By following these strategies for decluttering with children, you create a clutter-free home with kids that not only reduces daily chaos but also positively contributes to the environment. It's a practice that instils the values of minimalism and quality over quantity in family life. The impact of this transition extends beyond your home, teaching your children about sustainable choices and the importance of conscious consumption in a world striving for a greener and more sustainable future.
When we delve into the world of minimalist kids' clothing, it becomes evident that this approach holds numerous environmental benefits. By prioritising sustainability in kids' fashion, you're making a conscious choice to invest in environmentally-friendly kids' clothing. These garments are designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and curbing the cycle of overconsumption. Quality takes precedence over quantity, and this shift towards durable clothing significantly contributes to minimising waste.
Furthermore, minimalist kids' clothing emphasises sustainability, a core aspect of raising children with an eco-conscious mindset. We all have an important role to play in reducing waste in kids' fashion. This sustainable approach teaches your kids the importance of quality over quantity, an invaluable lesson that will guide them towards making eco-friendly choices as they grow.
As you embark on your journey towards a minimalist kids' wardrobe, it's essential to remember that it's not about eliminating all clothing items. The key is to take a balanced approach that ensures that your child has everything they need without being overwhelmed by an abundance of clothes.
Sustainable parenting practices often involve shopping mindfully. Consider your child's daily activities, weather conditions, and personal preferences when making clothing choices. Select pieces that serve multiple purposes, reducing the need for excessive wardrobe items. With an everyday wardrobe that you can dress up or down, you can spice your style up with much-loved jewellery, accessories and innovative styling practices. This approach simplifies life with kids through minimalism, making the morning routine smoother and more eco-conscious.
When embracing a minimalist lifestyle with your children, it's essential to implement strategies that align with both sustainability and budget-consciousness. This dual approach not only benefits the environment but also your financial well-being. Mindful shopping for kids' clothing plays a crucial role in this endeavour. By being mindful of what you purchase, you can engage in sustainable and budget-friendly parenting.
One effective strategy is to focus on sourcing high-quality kids' clothing brands. Seek out reputable brands that prioritise quality and sustainability. Quality kids' clothing brands ensure that their garments are designed to last, ultimately reducing the need for frequent replacements. Additionally, these sustainable kids' fashion brands often adhere to eco-friendly practices in their production processes. Investing in such brands not only guarantees durability but also aligns with your commitment to eco-conscious parenting.
]]>It's an established truth that no two children are the same, especially when it comes to how they experience growth spurts, making the task of finding the perfect fit in kids' clothing an ever-present challenge for parents and caretakers.
One of the primary reasons behind this challenge is the unpredictable nature of children's growth rates - which is a dynamic process. They grow rapidly during early childhood and then again during puberty. The way kids grow, too, is a complex system of hormones and plates. Unlike trees, which grow from root to end, our bones must grow inside out. However, the pace and timing of these growth spurts can vary greatly from one child to another. These sudden sizing challenges can lead to a wardrobe full of clothes that no longer fit, causing the need to replace the old with the new, and resulting in discarded garments.
Children's clothing returns have far-reaching environmental implications that often go overlooked. When kids outgrow their clothes in the blink of an eye, it leads to a higher rate of returned items. These returns create a concerning carbon footprint. When items are returned, they usually go through rigorous quality control procedures.
These seemingly innocuous practices significantly contribute to carbon dioxide emissions and water wastage. Plus, returned items are sometimes deemed unsellable due to wear and tear, which forces manufacturers to discard them as waste. This waste, which could have been otherwise avoided, adds to the existing pollution crisis and contributes to the ever-mounting waste in landfills, which is far from an eco-friendly scenario.
Understanding children's growth rates and the resulting sizing challenges is essential not only for your child's comfort but also to address the hidden environmental consequences.
So, what's the solution to this issue, you might ask? Petit Pli has a groundbreaking approach to tackle these challenges with innovative sizing solutions that harmonise with children's growth spurts while upholding the values of sustainability and style. Delve into the science behind children's growth spurts and clothing fit and explore how Petit Pli is helping parents understand and overcome sizing challenges in kids' clothing during these significant phases of growth.
Understanding children's growth rates is fundamental to addressing the challenges of finding the right size for children's clothing. Kids grow at different rates due to a multitude of factors. Genetics play a significant role in determining a child's growth potential. Therefore, two children of the same age can exhibit contrasting growth patterns depending on their family history. Hormones also contribute to the variation in growth rates. The growth hormone, in particular, has a substantial impact on a child's physical development. For those, like us, that love science, here's the lowdown: each bone has specialised growth centres, which is the growth plate, and the cells in these plates produce and distribute cartilage, which then calcifies and transforms into hard bone, extending the length of the plate. Pretty neat, right!
Nutrition and health further influence children's growth rates. A well-balanced diet and good health can lead to more consistent and predictable growth. Furthermore, external environmental factors, such as living conditions and access to healthcare, also play a part in shaping a child's growth pattern.
As children's growth rates differ significantly, it becomes apparent how challenging it is to find the right size for children. A garment that fits perfectly one day may become too tight or short within weeks, leading to constant wardrobe turnover. This predicament increases the number of clothing items discarded and further contributes to the problem of excessive waste in the fashion industry.
Children experiencing rapid growth phases require larger sizes, but it's challenging to predict the exact size they'll be in the near future. As a result, parents often have to guess the right size or frequently purchase new clothes.
Petit Pli recognizes the significance of these sizing challenges and is committed to finding solutions that consider the varying growth rates in children. Through our innovative designs and adaptable garments, we aim to alleviate the struggles faced by parents and make sure kids have comfortable and stylish clothing that can accommodate their ever-changing sizes. Each of our garments grows through seven sizes which aims to simplify the size-choosing process while reducing waste!
One significant environmental consequence of inaccurate sizing in children's clothing is the surge in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to excessive returns. The clothing industry's complex supply chain, which involves manufacturing, shipping, and return processes, contributes to its carbon footprint. When parents purchase clothes that do not fit their children, they often return these items to the retailer. The return journey of these products back to the retailer or manufacturer results in additional transportation emissions.
Moreover, once the returned clothing items reach their destination, many of them are deemed unsellable in their returned state due to potential wear and tear. Consequently, these clothing items are typically discarded, leading to even more waste. In addition to the CO2 emissions generated by the return process itself, discarded clothing items exacerbate the environmental impact.

Addressing the environmental consequences of inaccurate sizing is crucial in reducing the environmental impact of returns. Kids apparel alone results in 180 million items of clothing ending up in landfills. These issues can no longer be overlooked in an era when climate change and environmental sustainability are at the forefront of global concerns. It is not merely a matter of eliminating waste; it is about lessening the substantial environmental footprint associated with the clothing industry.
Acknowledging these issues highlights the significance of developing children's clothing that accommodates growth spurts and minimises unnecessary returns. Petit Pli takes these concerns to heart and is dedicated to providing solutions that help parents find the right size for their children without contributing to the environmental issues caused by inaccurate sizing. Our commitment to sustainability drives our innovative approach to clothing design, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in the fashion industry.

We are thrilled to announce an exciting collaboration that transcends boundaries and merges the realms of art, fashion, and technology. On this special occasion of the 4th of July, we are delighted to give you a sneak peek of Print 13, an exclusive collection that embodies creativity and innovation like never before. This extraordinary collaboration marks our first-ever partnership with a talented artist based in the United States.
Inspired by the thought-provoking artwork of Shawna X , "Sing Body Electric," Print 13 represents a convergence of visionary creativity and AI-generated designs. Each garment in this collection is a wearable work of art, boasting vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and a touch of surrealism that captures the imagination.
Shawna X is an American artist of Chinese descent who fearlessly dominates the art scene with her bold and vibrant creations. Hailing from the vibrant city of New York, she explores profound themes of identity, creativity, and motherhood through her art. With her multimedia projects and installations in public spaces, Shawna X sheds light on the intricate connections between the human body, nature, and the human experience itself.
Collaborating with Shawna X to bring Print 13 to life has been an incredible journey. Her unique perspective and artistic vision have blended seamlessly with our passion for innovation and design.
Parenting Tip:
In a world that often feels fast-paced and overwhelming, staying connected to the present moment can seem like chasing a fleeting dream. As a fellow parent, Shawna X has a valuable tip to share with all of us: incorporating quick meditations and tuning into our bodies. She emphasises the importance of making this an ongoing practice, especially with the demands of raising two young children. Amidst the chaos and busyness of modern life, it is crucial to prioritise presence and fully embrace the beautiful messiness of parenthood.
Print 13 is an exceptional collaboration that showcases the limitless possibilities when art, fashion, and technology intersect. We are immensely proud to introduce this exclusive collection on Saturday 8th July 2023, which highlights the extraordinary talent of Shawna X and brings her thought-provoking artwork to life in wearable form.

GRASS JUNGLE
Melbourne-based artist, Carla McRae collaborated with Petit to create Print 11. The print is based on a series of drawings made in 2019 while Carla was in the lush hinterland just outside Melbourne, Australia. The original ink-drawings were loose, abstract magnifications of grasslands and made with a speedball calligraphy nib.
We love the parallel in Carla’s work how LittleHumans play and grow up inspecting patches of grass; nesting their heads between blades to observe a jungle of micro-life! It’s why our childrenswear is designed to grow, transform and adventure with them. Working across multiple mediums such as drawing, digital illustration, installation, murals and rugs, Carla’s work takes inspiration from cartoons, popular culture and everyday observation with her signature blend of both detail and minimalism.
Read on below, to learn more about Carla!
PART I. CARLA’S WORLD
Tell us about your print and illustrations for Petit Pli
I was thinking a lot about attention and scale, the macro and micro, and shapes in nature. As an exercise, I wanted to see how I might draw a patch of grass, one blade at a time, considering each singular blade like a playful individual character. I created a rug design out of this drawing, as I liked the idea of people being able to sit on this patch of fantastical grass. In this iteration of the design for Petit Pli, I've remixed colours and extended the narrative to add some bouncy little grub shapes and scattered blobs and amoebas - a head nod to the LittleHumans who will be wearing these designs and a prompt to look a little closer at our world with a sense of child-like, joyful curiosity.
Do you remember how you saw the world when you were a LittleHuman?
I think I was a pretty sensitive LittleHuman - a little shy, I was a bit of a quiet observer and had a lot of big feelings I didn't know how to get out. Drawing was a good portal for me and allowed me to process my thoughts and express myself. I remember being moved by things and wanting to find ways to record or recreate them - in a way, this is still the way I approach the world and is probably somewhere close to the root of my drawing practice!
Do you have any advice to share with LittleHumans interested in following art or becoming printmakers?
Do what makes you feel good and brings you joy. Making art for yourself can be a real place of sanctuary and respite - it can take care of you. There are no rules and there is no such thing as a bad drawing!
What have LittleHumans taught you? Have they changed you as a person / artist?
They remind me to play! In an artistic sense, I love to watch the beautiful reckless abandon that a child has when making and playing - it's surprisingly hard to get back to that headspace as an adult and unlearn the boring boundaries and rules we've created for ourselves.
PART II. CARLA’S RECOMMENDATIONS 🚀
Seen any recent innovations or inspirations that have caught your eye?
I recently went to see the film 'Fire of Love' at a film festival here in Melbourne. It's a documentary about two French volcanologists, Katie and Maurice Krafft, who spent their lives researching and capturing incredible imagery of volcanoes. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it (how is lava even real?!) and their passion and devotion to their craft really moved me. They were scientists but really I think they were artists too.
Recommendations where you are based?
I am based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. I work from a studio in Collingwood, which is a really fun area full of lots of good food, galleries, pubs and shops! I recommend just coming here and having a wander around - you'll end up somewhere fun!
FRUIT & FLORA
Lotta Maija is a visual and surface designer from Helsinki, Finland. Lotta's graphic style exudes colour, organic and bold shapes and is a whimsical twist on classic Finnish folk flowers and fruit iconography. Lotta achieves this through the use of classic shapes with super-natural colours. We believe her visual style will light up the imaginations of evolving active LittleHuman minds.
Outside of growing up in Finland, Lotta has spent time living in Tokyo, Japan. Japanese influences creep through her creative process. Considered details and lovingly-assembled installations earmark her style. We are thrilled to share Lotta’s world and instantly knew her style could come to life on, and bring life, to Clothes That Grow childrenswear. Step into her world:
PART I. LOTTA’S WORLD
Tell us about your print and illustrations for Petit Pli
I like to play with the shapes of objects. My prints and illustrations are mainly flower and fruit themed and I’ve created my own recognisable palette of bright colours and pastel hues. I love how different shapes form with only one or two colours. The aesthetic stems from my textile printing design background. In my illustrations, objects are flat, combining solid colour with defined details.
Do you remember how you saw the world when you were a LittleHuman?
As a child I was always doing crafts, drawing and painting with my grandmother. Every time I visited I knew we would paint and would eagerly await it. We’d decide on a theme (animals, flowers, cartoons etc.) and both of us created our own versions. At the summer cottage, we also made herbariums from wildflowers, drawing and painting them.
Do you have any advice to share with LittleHumans interested in following art or becoming printmakers?
When I was young, I was always worried that I wasn’t good at drawing. Now I've studied and am working in the field, I'd say the drawing skill is secondary. The essential thing is creating one's own visual universe. I still don't think I'm a good drawer but that's alright and I don't have to be because I have my own thing, my own visual world with colours and shapes I've collected and created.
What have LittleHumans taught you? Have they changed you as a person / artist?
LittleHumans have a special and fresh way of seeing and looking at things. As a designer I think it's important to try to maintain a childlike way of looking and observing the world.
PART II. LOTTA’S RECOMMENDATIONS 🚀
Seen any recent innovations or inspirations that have caught your eye?
I've been following a Finnish company called Spinnova that is creating a new sustainable textile fibre made from wood pulp.
Recommendations where you are based?
I'm from and based in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finn I love to throw water on hot stones in a small room, aka go to a sauna. We have nice public saunas in the city but my favourite one is Finland's oldest swimming hall, Yrjönkatu swimming hall. The swimming hall building is architecturally significant: it was designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio and represents the classical trend of the 1920s. I love to go a few times a week during the winter.
Is there anything we didn't cover which you would share with or recommend to the Petit Pli community?
I want to thank Petit Pli for the collaboration and trust and to say that I admire innovations like theirs and I'm super happy and honoured to be a little part of their journey.
Lotta, we are grateful to you! The Lotta print will debut in our new comfort range. Keep your eyes peeled!

ANIMATING SURFACES
For our Print 09, we worked with Chinese-born illustrator-animator Yukai Du.
Yukai's work is vibrant. Creating imaginative compositions of alternate realities familiar to Earth. Yukai uses colourful illustrations and popping animation to explain concepts such as prime numbers, science and space, in a way that simplifies and demands attention. It’s a unique talent, and one we’re pretty jealous of,
With Print 09 we wanted to animate one of Yukai’s artistic worlds on our Clothes That Grow childrenswear.
Yukai has previously collaborated with Adobe, Apple and the New Yorker. We are so excited to have her work live and grow on designs for LittleHumans.
To learn more about Yukai and her material musings read on below:
PART I. YUKAI’S WORLD
Tell us about your print and illustrations for Petit Pli
My illustration is an imagination world with waves of fun elements for the LittleHumans to immerse and explore.
Do you remember how you saw the world when you were a LittleHuman?
I remember the first time my mum told me about the first metro station opened in my hometown. She said we can take trains by going under the ground. In my head, I saw humans walking through the solid concrete roads like ghosts to the underground.
Do you have any advice to share with LittleHumans interested in following art or becoming printmakers?
Keep a diary to draw down what you see. I used to keep a drawing diary when I was a LittleHuman. Every ordinary thing was very interesting to put in the diary to me, like grandpa reading a newspaper and I copied the newspaper titles without knowing any words.
What have LittleHumans taught you? Have they changed you as a person / artist?
They are so imaginative! As an adult and working as an illustrator, I do have a lot of rules and knowledges which could be limited. My LittleHuman friends taught me how to be free and think outside the box.
PART II. YUKAI’S RECOMMENDATIONS 🚀
Seen any recent innovations or inspirations that have caught your eye?
Recently I went to MAAT in Lisbon and saw an amazing installation called Prisma by VHILS.The artist used multiple gigantic curved screen to display different city life in Hong Kong, Mexico City, LA, etc. As a viewer, I was surrounded by all these curved videos and immersed in all those cities at the same time, as if I traveled time and space.
Recommendations where you are based?
London, east London to be precise. Love the River Lea canals and the Hackney marshes.

GERMAN GRAFFITI
For or Print 08 design we collabaorated with Marc David Spengler. Marc is a young artist based out of Stuttgart, Germany. He only JUST graduated from The State Academy of Art and Design. Marc’s graphic style of prints play with adding and removing volumes of basic geometric shapes. This process was by inspired by early experimentations with graffiti. Ahead of Marc’s collaboration with Petit Pli he has worked with Van’s, Hermes and Warby Parker
As a school boy, Marc took to the grey walls of Stuttgart to experiment with the medium. Soon after, bubble letters were replaced by simple abstract shapes,, similar to those seen in his work today. Why? Marc explains that words and letters were limiting. Greater opportunity came from spraying shapes. There was a greater opportunity to transfer emotions and feelings. Learn more about Marc in our short interview below:
PART I. MARC’S WORLD
Tell us about your print and illustrations for Petit Pli
The artwork shows a variety of shapes that I like to experiment with. My goal for it was to make it harmonious in the colors and the shapes. The original drawing of this artwork was part of the final round and exhibition of the Luxembourg Art Prize in 2020.
Do you remember how you saw the world when you were a LittleHuman?
Not really. But maybe I kept the same view on the world.
Do you have any advice to share with LittleHumans interested in following art or becoming printmakers?
Follow your interest, do what makes you happy. If you like to draw, keep on doing it.
What have LittleHumans taught you? Have they changed you as a person / artist?
I have learnt that a baby can put a smile on your face.
PART II. MARC’S RECOMMENDATIONS 🚀
Seen any recent innovations or inspirations that have caught your eye?
I recently learned about Dall-e-2 and I would love to experiment with it.
Recommendations where you are based?
I’m based in a smaller suburb outside of Stuttgart, Germany. It’s where I grew up.

Our latest material innovation the Entropy Vest, has been featured in Dezeen, Yanko, Fast Company, Trendhunter and El Confidencial. Thank you to industry-leading publications and voices in the design community for spreading the word about the Entropy Vest.
“Instead of using batteries and electronics, this vest will make you feel warm and fuzzy thanks to some infinitely reusable chemical magic” - Jesus Diaz, Fast Company
The Entropy Vest is part of our newest mission - to make clothing, and the wearer, adaptable to different weather conditions like never before. Petit Pli’s Entropy Vest was created to challenge the true capabilities of existing thermally regulating fabrics or embedded electronics. The Entropy Vest will also be released in a cooling version, for sweltering heat conditions.
The Entropy Vest is the perfect layer for bitingly cold starts. It is light enough to be worn over a t-shirt or compression top, and thin enough to fit easily under a windbreaker. The transparent vest contains a Phase Change Material that instantly heats the body on activation, gradually dropping in temperature as you begin to move and warm up - to avoid overheating. The Entropy Vest state changes from a liquid to a gel-like solid.
With the Entropy Vest, Petit Pli explores the potential for garments to have adaptable thermal properties without the need for electronics. This is pertinent as GlobalData forecasts indicate that in 2020, 12.3% of the global population adopted wearables; this will reach 65.63% by 2030. On account of a lack of infrastructure for wearable technology recycling processes and e-waste generated in 2019 - 53.6 million tonnes (MT) will increase by 38% by 2030 (United Nations University, 2020). In response to this growing waste-stream, Petit Pli will continue innovating designs fulfilling real human needs; enabling them to have greater emotional durability & longevity.
Ryan Mario Yasin, CEO and Founder shares:
“Britain is on track to becoming a hot-house. As the climate crisis continues, rapid and extreme temperature fluctuations are becoming more common - this means extremes of cold, as well as extremes of heat. Consequently, humanity - especially the next generation, is at risk of exposure to thermal stress. The Entropy Vest helps its wear adapt to extreme cold - giving the wearer a sudden burst of heat at the click of a button.
The project builds upon Petit Pli’s award-wining and in demand scalable patented growth technology & know-how to develop modular expandable childrenswear with temperature sensing & signalling capabilities at scale, with the aim of optimising infant thermoregulation. This capacity is significant as the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts < 4 years mortality related to heat exposure caused by climate change increasing by 30% to >100,000 deaths per year by 2050.”
With our multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers at Petit Pli, and a universe of possibilities, we can’t stop looking for new material solutions. Clothes that Grow rethinks the essential elements of clothing, through the prism of engineering, human centred design and sustainability. Our research into thermochemical materials allows us to break into new areas. We can’t wait to reveal our next exploration.
Stay Curious,
Team Petit Pli
P.S. We like to keep the ideas flowing at Petit Pli HQ, new ideas are always brewing. What do you our community think of the Entropy Vest? For what application would you put it to use?
]]>Petit Pli doesn't do ordinary. We never have. We never will. When looking at where to set up our first physical store we were in search of a space which spoke to our values: innovation, sustainability and engineering.
We found it. We're happy to share that we're going back to our roots and launching our first brick and mortar retail spaceship at Battersea Power Station. For us, Battersea has been woven into our story from the start.
Battersea Power Station needs no introduction really. Globally recognised as one of London’s architectural icons, Turbine Hall B forms a counterpart to the earlier Turbine Hall A, using the same materials and colour palette, but with a simpler aesthetic that reflects the advent of international modernism. It has exceptional interiors that bring heritage and a sense of place to create a unique retail environment unlike anywhere else in the world.
Petit Pli will soon be part of Turbine Hall B’s story, and vice versa. Construction started in the 1940’s and 50’s during a post-war Britain dominated by dreams of space travel, modernism and the power of science. The hall is clad seamlessly in blue grey faience wall tiles with polished stainless steel fixtures and equipment. Much of the original brutalist interiors and industrial magic have been preserved for future generations to see and for Clothes That Grow to tesselate into.
A finely curated mix of world-renowned retailers and emerging brands will be setting up shop in this splendid space and we’re immensely proud to be one of them. A rich tapestry of retail, culture, education, leisure and refreshments will make up this exciting new quarter. Clothes That Grow childrenswear, adultwear, accessories and new inventions to come will be for sale within this unique world of heritage and power!
We’re so excited to welcome the future of humanity to discover the Petit Pli fold in the flesh. So often our community relay to us that it is the first-hand experience of our innovation that is the eureka moment. We saw it for ourselves back when we hosted our concept store retail space at 88 Regent Street.
From the beginning, Petit Pli has been on a mission to reduce emissions and waste in the garment industry. Streamlining and amplifying better sustainability for LittleHumans and TallHumans alike is our rocket fuel. With a sparkling new spaceship in the form of our Battersea Power Station shop, we can multiply this by great magnitudes.
From starting out as a one-man-band back in 2017, through several different Mission Control offices, collecting multiple team members, awards, investors and new designs, this journey wouldn’t be possible without all of you. It is you that has got us to this step in our journey and we are eternally grateful. So we are very excited to welcome you, yes all of you, along when we launch this new base on October 14th 2022. There will be so much to discover and we have a cornucopia of ideas and plans up our folded, rolled-up sleeves for you. Sign up to our newsletter to be kept in the loop every step and leap of the way.
Over and out,
Petit Pli

“Revolutions always start in small groups." - These words of wisdom come from Edwin Keh. He’s CEO of The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles & Apparel (HKRITA) and a force behind countless innovations.
We heard from Edwin - in person, last month when we were invited as Global Change Award (GCA) alumni for the 2022 GCA accelerator week. As a small brand, Edwin's words reminded Team Petit Pli that constraints, like lack of money and lack of people are not wholly negative things. They can be wholly positive. He explained using relevant historical that revolutions - en masse, typically only occur when people with a sense of urgency get together in small rooms. Edwin's speech allowed us the opportunity to reflect on how far Petit Pli has come since 2019; our room has changed and the people in it. Both variables have scaled in equal measure.
Helena Helmersson, CEO of H&M Group
If you are new here, the GCA is an awards programme and accelerator run by H&M Foundation. In 2019 - the year we won, 6,512 innovators applied. The programme is competitive for good reason, it's the best in the game. Think Y-combinator for sustainable fashion innovators.
As alumni, we get to catchup with fellow innovators in Stockholm once a year. The 2022 accelerator week happened in June instead of March. Meaning we got experience sunshine in Sweden - a true rarity, and a never ending day.
This time around, we also had the opportunity to exhibit our production ready #clothesthatgrow solutions at HM Group HQ. It was part of the new Planet Positive Perspectives Forum was nothing short of awesome. Last time we were in Stockholm in 2019, our sustainable childrenswear, technical outerwear, accessories and packaging innovations were all concepts. All fierce concepts, but concepts nonetheless.
Our stand was flanked by co-winners stretching all the way from 2022 to 2017. It was a room made up of people who share common interests and values, that have all leant on each other to ideate our visions and offer valuable support during the bumps, cliff drops and highs that come with entrepreneurship.
Post pandemic, taking part in person felt extra special. And took a lot of organisation to pull off - it was canceled 5 times.
Now we’re back and the suitcases are unpacked, we want to introduce you to some of our fellow changemakers, making waves:
Fellow 2019 winners, Dimpora are mountain and outdoor obsessed. No wonder, as they’re based in Switzerland! Co-founders Mario and Anna are both Chemists. They entered fashion after finding planet friendly alternatives to waterproof membranes. These are the thin coatings found on all waterproof and rainproof garments. Way back, we interviewed Anne from Dimpora, check it out here.
2022 winners SaltyCo are on a mission to revolutionise insulated stuffing in outerwear. Say goodbye to goose down! The team started out like Petit Pli - a Design Engineering student project at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College. Saltyco uses regenerative agriculture - primarily growing SaltyCo yarns on saline (salty) rich peat bogs. This means they can re-grow native plants that heal land at the same time of producing natural fibers which can keep you toasty.
CottonAce by Wadhwani AI also hail from the 2022 GCA alumni, they’re new friends. The problem they’re here to intercept? Every year, unnecessary amounts of cotton crops are lost to pests! CottonAce is an app that guides smallholder cotton farmers in India and other developing nations to reduce pesticides and increase yield and incomes. They’ve developed real time recommendations on the optimal time to take preventive action and protect farms from avoidable crop losses.
With hope this whistle-stop voyage has introduced innovation to your day,
Over and out,
Petit Pli
For the design of our latest print - Print 05, we collaborated with illustrator and industrial designer Sebastian König. Print 05 includes surreal characters, sourced from Sebastian’s notebooks scattered in his studio. The characters are a whimsical departure from the reality us TallHumans are all too aware of. We loved each of the characters print, we were compelled to understand what inspired them and in turn Sebastian's very own creative reality.
Read our Q&A below with Sebastian below:
1. Can you share the story behind the characters which feature in your print for Petit Pli?
The characters are part of an ongoing personal work series. Besides working on client work and more complex personal projects like zines and books I also work on ongoing series that play with visual twists. I start with scribbles of regular objects and then think about a change or quirk that adds a new idea to the illustration.
2. What unites all the characters in your mind?
For me, I think the figures together represent LittleHumans’ relationship and perception of the ‘real’ world. The series is both, training my drawing skills and having fun for me. On the one hand I like the moment the illustration surprises the viewer, but I also like the idea of creating a visually attractive drawing. What I love about my profession is to create new things out of the blue and build up my own universe of new ideas. The characters are part of that world where things are allowed to be different and unusual.
3. What was your process of incorporating the characters from your work? Is there one which you're sad to not make the cut? Do you have a favourite character ?
When I was choosing the characters for the pattern I was looking for illustrations that work well together regarding the topic, shape and pattern repetition. Also I liked the playfulness and the humour of the chosen drawings. I wanted the pattern to work well in detail as well from far away. Actually I really like the „ballerina-scissors“. I love the dynamic expressive pose and the perfect combination of two ideas in one drawing here. Also I really like the piano man. One can actually hear the piano sound while the character is walking by.
4. Do you remember how you saw the world when you were a LittleHuman?
When I was a little human everything felt much safer and more protected to me. I was lucky to grow up with a lot of freedom and tried to extend my childhood to the maximum. I always have been more introverted as a child and loved to play or do creative things like making music and drawing back then. So some things about how I see the world might not have changed since then. Except for the understanding that things don't have to stay how they are and that you are able to change the world that surrounds you actively.
5. Do you have any advice to share with LittleHumans interested in following art / becoming printmakers?
Be curious, and do what you love. Also, make your own rules that define beauty for you. Being creative really is about the joy and your own development. Of course it is good to have some goals in life. But in the first place being creative has to be joyful.
6. What would you tell yourself as a LittleHuman (child)?
I would tell myself to have less fear. I still sometimes overthink things and also did as a child. Also I left out a lot of opportunities from having fear of unexpected events. My little me could have relaxed a bit more and have been more spontaneous.
7. I understand that you have children yourself, what have your LittleHumans taught you? Have they changed you as a person / artist?
Being a father changed everything for the better. As well for me as a person and as an artist. It is great to see the world through their eyes now again as a kid. From the baby days when they discover their basic environment to school kids learning and developing. Also I use my time much more conscious and are way more productive from having a clocked through week. Actually my kids are good drawing advisers too and often help me with finishing and fine-tuning ideas. They are brutally honest and have a fresh view on everything.

Geometry and geometric forms delight and foster the imaginations of Little and Tall Humans the world over.
For our first ever collaboration print, we wanted to animate the existing work of artists by superimposing them on Petit Pli garments, allowing them to morph into new forms and shapes never taken before.
South of Petit Pli’s own studio in Hackney Wick, is Peckham. The area is a creative hub and cultural melting pot. But more importantly, it’s home to artist and printmaker Jonathan Lawes. We came across Lawes’ work during a team Instagram deep-dive. We were drawn to his prints as they combine the playfulness in shape and placement of Matisse’s paper cutouts and vibrancy in colour used by Mondrian in his iconic grid compositions. More importantly, we thought the shapes used by Lawes’ could dance and grow in beautiful non-uniform ways when placed on a childrenswear . Not soon after scrolling through Lawes’ profile, we decided to take our shot. With our hearts on our sleeves, we shot him a DM and an email for good measure asking if he would be interested in a special project! To our delight he was. And more excitingly, we had an open invitation to his studio space!
We met with Jonathan in October 2021, long after the designs for our collaboration designs were signed and sealed. Ahead of this, our collaborative design work happened all digitally; a sign of the times.
Seeing how he works first hand, selecting and mixing colours, drawing shapes and how he moves in his space was a luxury. He doesn’t like to take a controlled approach. Instead he lets the printing process guide him. He doesn’t follow specific colour guidelines, which leads to a lot of experimentation. Lawes considers every colour combination a surprise.
In between blots of dud prints set up for test shots we discussed his process and journey to Peckham. Lawes studied Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds Arts University. After graduating in 2009, he spent close to a decade in Berlin. Lawes returned to the UK in 2018, stumbling upon an industrial printmaking studio - pictured above, where he still dedicates hours experimenting with colour and layering. Since setting up shop in the big smoke, he has collaborated with The Conran Shop and COS and many more for special projects.
However, our collaboration with Lawes marks our first! We were excited to work with someone who was as intrigued by the world of growth and visual geometry as us. Lawes confessed during our meeting that he had never seen anything like Petit Pli's material before and enjoyed exploring and experimenting with it.
A collaboration presented a unique opportunity for the Petit Pli team. We were thrilled join forces with Jonathan to create unique and innovative products together.
